DIOCESAN MATTERS

1. Lambeth Conference Discussions at the Conference will undoubtedly dominate the news.  No doubt the media will concentrate on divisions and differences of opinion.  Prayer for positive growth in Evangelism and Mission in the Anglican Communion would be a better priority at this time.

2. St. Albans – Vacancy in See Committee This Committee has met twice to draw up a diocesan profile and consider in the current climate the gifts and abilities that would be most desirable in the next bishop.  The election of six members from the Committee to represent the Diocese at the Crown Nominations Commission takes place at the end of May.

A number of members of the D.E.F. who are also members of the Vacancy in See Committee are being nominated.

As part of the consultation process the Appointment Secretaries to the Prime Minister and the Archbishops are required to hold a public meeting to hear the views of the Church of England members.  This meeting is scheduled for the evening of 18th June probably in Bedford at a venue to be announced.  Members are encouraged to attend and participate if they want to make their views known.

3. D.E.F. Committee Two members have recently stepped down from the DEF Committee (David Gundry to concentrate on other ministry and Andy Hartropp who has moved to Oxford Diocese).  We are particularly in need of a new Treasurer.  This is not an arduous task but is clearly necessary.  If you would be willing to serve as Treasurer or are interested in being on the Committee then please contact Philip Lovegrove

4. Grants for Parishes The Diocese has a number of Specific Funds available for applications from Parishes to enable both individuals and parishes themselves to develop ministry skills or special projects to advance growth in Mission.

Some examples are outlined below.  The diocesan website has further information as well.  The newly appointed Diocesan Mission Development Officer, John Kiddle, is very keen to hear from parishes and people seeking advice or assistance in this vital area of the Church’s Mission.

Funds held for Special Purposes

1. PMDF Mission Development Fund

2. Verulam House Trust Fund

3. Parish Mission Support Fund

4. Grimethorpe’s Charity

5. Various Legacy Trusts

6. City Church Fund Surplus (Metropolitan Police Area)

5. Diocesan Synod Elections Members are reminded that newly elected Deanery Synod members need to ensure that individuals are elected to Diocesan Synod as anyone considering standing for General Synod in July 2010 is advised to have made some input at the diocesan level prior to the election date.

6. General Synod – July 2008 in York The Report of the Women Bishops Legislative Drafting Group has been published and will be debated in York.  The text is available on the Church of England website.

7 Annual Conference A very successful day on 28th February at both venues with over 70 attendees who much appreciated Steven Croft’s presentation on “Fresh Expressions” and John Kiddle’s Diocesan perspective.  Suggestions for a topic for 2009 would be appreciated.
